    Anticipating Spring

Is Spring on the way? It is February here in Texas, an unusual February. The last week of January saw our temperatures here in South Texas in the twenties with some surrounding areas getting a dusting of snow. Now in the first week of February, temperatures this week have rebounded, with lows in 60s and highs in the 80s. I am taking advantage of the warmer temperatures this week to begin spring clean up. I am raking and removing leaves that fall from my oak and hickory trees. I am cleaning out flower and garden beds, pulling weeds and turning the soil in planting preparation. Planting will depend on weather watching for the last freeze date. Next week is forecast to be lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s, which looks good. I’m still deciding whether I want to start transplants indoors or just directly sow into the garden and supplement with store bought tomato, squash, and cucumber plants. In the meantime, I will continue cleaning and prepping for my favorite season . . . Spring.

My name is Jean Green. I am a retired school librarian who lives on eight acres in south Texas. I love books, research, and education of others, as well as myself. I have been gardening on and off for over fifty years now with successes as well as failures. In this bog, I will share what I have learned through the years and what I am still trying to learn.
